History
- How it started
The Student Union Activities Board is as old as the Student Union itself. Part of Former President Henry Bennett's long-range plan for Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, the Student Union was established in 1950. Not only is Oklahoma State University’s Student Union one-of-a-kind, but it was and still is the largest Student Union in the United States.
Even in the initial planning stages, President Bennett designed the Student Union to truly belong to the students. To do so, Bennett specially selected a group of OSU students to form the Student Union Board, a new student group tasked with determining policies for the use of the Union. As an added perk, he also allowed this group to name rooms in the Union.
In 1951, the Student Union Board decided to change its name to more accurately encompass its purpose, becoming the Student Union Activities Board (SUAB). SUAB has since found a home within the Department of Campus Life in the Student Union. Over the past sixty years, the Student Union Activities Board has created a wide range of programs and experiences for the OSU student body designed to enhance the OSU Campus Life and the overall student experience. If you are a previous member of SUAB and would like to share any photos, videos, or other memories you may have, please email us at suab@okstate.edu!
